Doris Davis Mitchell Teacher, Real Estate Agent

Doris Lucille Davis Mitchell, 79, a teacher, real estate agent and gift shop owner, died of a ruptured esophagus April 25 at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore. She lived in Chevy Chase.

Mrs. Mitchell taught chemistry, biology and physics in the District's public junior high schools, including Hart, Deal and MacFarland. She developed an environmental curriculum for the schools before leaving about 1980.

Mrs. Mitchell then ran a gift shop in Silver Spring for several years before becoming a real estate agent with Long & Foster, a position she held until 1988, when she retired.
She was born in Frederick and graduated from Morgan State University in Baltimore. She received a master's degree in adult education in 1965 from Federal City College, one of the predecessors of the University of the District of Columbia.

Mrs. Mitchell, a bridge player, was once chair of the American Bridge Association's national tournament. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta, the National Science Teachers Association and many social clubs.

Her husband, Dr. William J. Mitchell, died in 1974.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen Mitchell Starika of Washington; and two sisters, Clarice Reid of Philadelphia and Alice Davis of Frederick.
